The Christiaen Huygens returns to Den Helder: an impressive story in the National Rescue Museum

The National Rescue Museum is proud to announce its newest acquisition: the motor launch Christiaen Huygens. This historic lifeboat, which played an important role in the rescue service, is returning to Den Helder. The Christiaen Huygens will be on display in the museum from 27 March 2025, exactly 50 years after the tragic disaster in which the boat sank during the rescue of the Hasco II.

A story of courage and loss

On 27 March 1975, the Christiaen Huygens sank during a rescue operation. Two courageous rescuers lost their lives, an event that left deep scars in Den Helder and beyond. The disaster symbolises the risks and sacrifices that rescuers are prepared to make to help others. The National Rescue Museum wants to share this story with its visitors in an honourable and poignant way.

Commemoration and unveiling

On 27 March 2025, the National Rescue Museum will organise a special ceremony to commemorate the disaster and unveil the Christiaen Huygens in its new home. During this ceremony, the impact of the disaster on the community and the rescue service will be commemorated. The boat, which has been carefully restored, will be given a prominent place in the museum, so that visitors can experience the story up close.

Crowdfunding for a meaningful exhibition

In order to realise this exhibition in a dignified manner, the museum has started a crowdfunding campaign. The aim is to bring the history of the Christiaen Huygens and the 1975 disaster to life in an impressive and respectful way. With the support of donors, the museum wants to develop an interactive and informative exhibition that does justice to the heroism of the rescuers and the impact of the rescue service in the Netherlands.
