Insulinde restoration officially starts
Good news! The restoration of the Insulinde has officially begun. Thanks to pledges from various funds, it was decided to start the first phase of the project. In consultation with Damen Shipyards Den Helder, it was determined which work could be carried out within this first phase.
Even before the official start, museum volunteers had already begun preparatory work. For instance, the inventory was removed from the ship, the fuel tanks were emptied, and the masts were removed. In addition, an old Gleniffer DC6 engine was retrieved from Groningen and brought to the museum's depot. Various parts from this engine are being used as spare parts for the overhaul of the Insulinde's engines.
Drying out at Damen
The next step was to take the Insulinde to the Damen shipyard. This took place on May 6. With the help of the Tjerk Hiddes, the ship made its journey to the shipyard, where it was immediately dry-docked and thoroughly pressure-washed. It was special that former mate Willem Willstra was present during this crossing. He was very happy to be there and to be able to step aboard 'his' Insulinde again. The first phase of the project is expected to last about two months. The focus is on two key components: hull repair and engine overhaul.
Thanks to all the support from funds, companies, and donors, the story of the Insulinde can be preserved for future generations. But we are not there yet. Every contribution, large or small, brings us closer to our goal. Will you help?
